Did you ever read the book or watch the film "Great Expectations" in your youth?
I did, and I loved it! I love all the Charles Dickens novels; they always found a way to speak to me personally! Did you know that Charles Dickens rewrote the ending of "Great Expectations" because it was deemed too sad an ending for such a potentially inspiring book? I think Mr Dickens was actually on to something with his first ending. What he wanted to do was end it in a way that was conventionally unexpected (at that time in history). Mr Dickens wanted his readers to know that happiness doesn't come the way we expect. To navigate life happily and successfully we must drop all our expectations of how we expect it to be because ultimately it is never going to end up the way we think it will go. Alas, he gave in to pressure, and the book ended in a more conventional and expected way for his readers. We all have "Great expectations" for our life, and the lives of the people we love and I am not saying we shouldn't, but what I am saying is that we shouldn't hold on to these expectations so tightly. It's more important to learn to be flexible, drop what you expect to happen and allow yourself to be open to all possibilities. What expectations are you holding on to you, for both yourself and other people? What would happen if you were to drop your expectations and expect absolutely nothing? Then just do things because it feels good or because you want to do it. If you keep getting stuck because you have too many "Great Expectations" of yourself or other people, here's what to do. Anytime you go to do something instead of having an expectation or an outcome in mind, reframe it to this: "It doesn't matter what the outcome is, I am going to do this just because it makes me feel good" You will be amazed at how wonderful it feels to have no "Great Expectations", and maybe you will find your life goes in the most unconventionally and surprisingly unexpected way! Give it a go, and do something, anything just for the sake of it or because if feels good and let me know how it works out for you.
